Trip Overview

This 10-day trek from Tsurphu to Yangpachen is an excellent option for those who would like to experience Tibetan herders’ way of life intimately. Yangpachen is well-known for its geothermal landscape. Hot water at 70°C bubbles and boils year-round in a dense mist. When the throttle valve is opened, steam and boiling water will shoot straight into the sky, creating the most magnificent spectacle.

The walk from Tsurphu to Yangpachen starts at Tsurphu Monastery. This strenuous stroll traverses many mountain valleys, including Leten and Bartso valleys, before entering the expansive and gusty Yangpachen valley. The altitude reaches 4400 meters throughout the journey, with a peak elevation of 5300 meters at Lasar-la. This hiking excellently blends cultural and wilderness activities with views of broad mountain panoramas, alpine tundra, and visits to monasteries and a nunnery.

Day 01

Fly to Gonggar airport then drive to Lhasa O/N Hotel (BB)

Upon reaching the airport, our amiable Tibetan guide will extend cordial greetings and present you with a Hada, the customary Tibetan ceremonial scarf.

You will then be transported to Lhasa, where you will rest for the day and prepare for the tour.

Day 02

Lhasa - Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Market O/N Hotel (BB)

Today, we will visit Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will also visit Barkhor Square market. Potala Palace, the winter home of the Dalai Lama, is a 13-floor building with more than 1000 rooms, several statues, artifacts, murals, and stupas.

Later, we will visit the Jokhang Temple, named Jo for Jowo Buddha and Khang for Chapel. It was built in 642 by the first King of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo, to place the image of Akshobhya Buddha, the gift of a Nepalese wife, Bhirkuti. Later, the temple was known for the gift, a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, by the King’s second Chinese wife.

We will stroll around the Barkhor market that encircles the Jokhang Temple. Pilgrims usually do the kora(circumambulate) of Jokhang temple in a clockwise direction. Also, you can buy gifts to take home, as numerous artifacts and cultural items like Buddha relics are available in this market.

Day 03

Lhasa - Visit Drepung Monastery and Sera Monastery O/N Hotel (BB)

After breakfast, our guide will take you to two great Gelug monasteries in Tibet, Drepung and Sera Monastery.

Drepung Monastery is one of Tibet’s “great three” Gelug Monasteries. It was established by Jamyang Choge Tashi Palden in 1416. Before the Fifth Dalai Lama constructed the Potala Palace, this monastery served as Tibet’s political hub and the residence of the Dalai Lamas.

Later, we will visit the Sera Monastery, built in 1419 by Tsongkapa. This monastery’s most significant architectural features are the 3 Buddhist colleges, 29 monk dormitories, and Coqen Assembly Hall. If you visit between Monday and Friday, you can witness Monks debate in the monastery’s courtyard. Also, watching the 9-meter statue of Maitreya, constructed in 1419, is one of this monastery’s fascinating features.

In the evening, we will visit the Norbulingka Palace, also known as the “Jewel Park.”, built by the 7th Dalai Lama and the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama.

Day 04

Drive to Tsurpu O/N Tented Camp (BLD)

After breakfast, we will drive about 2-3 hours to Tsurpu(4300m). Today, we will use our time to acclimate, as we have reached a higher elevation via a bumpy ride.

Once we reach Tsurpu, we will have lunch. Later, we will visit Tsurpu Monastery, the house of the Karmapa branch of the Kagyupa order of Tibetan Buddhism. This monastery dates back 800 years and is located in central Tibet.

We will place our camp near the Tsurpu monastery.

Day 05

Trek to Lenten O/N Tented Camp (BLD)

Today is the first day of our trek, and we will trek to Lenten from Tsurpu Monastery. This trek covers about 11 km and will take 4-5 hours. On the way, you will see numerous mountain streams and green lands where the locals used to camp for the summer herding months. We can stop at the yak hair tent and have fresh yak milk or salted butter tea.

Once we reach Lenten, we will find the plain area and place our tent.

Day 06

Trek to Bar Tso O/N Tented Camp (BLD)

Today, we will have breakfast in the camp and then start our trek to Bar Tso. After 6kms, we will pass through the highest pass, Lasar La(5300m).

From this vantage point, your eyes will be captivated by the breathtaking vista of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains, which are perched on the northern Tibetan plains. Later, we will reach the Bar Tso village, a nomad community with just 5-6 houses, where we will place our tent and rest.

Day 07

Trek to Dorje Ling Nunnery O/N Tented Camp (BLD)

Today, our destination will be the Dorje Ling Nunnery. As you depart from the town of Bartso behind and follow a broad route that crosses a valley and ascends another ridge, you will witness the mesmerizing views of Nyenchen Tanghlha (7111m), the holiest peak in central Tibet. Later, you will stop at the Tajung village, where you can watch the locals grazing their sheep and yaks on the plateaus.

By the afternoon, you will reach Dorje Ling Nunnery, where the camp will be set. The nuns of Dorje Ling Nunnery will offer you a huge lump of yak meat in their tea house.

Day 08

Trek to Yangpachen, Visit Monastery & Hot Spring O/N Tented Camp (BLD)

Today is the last day of your camping trek. The very next day, you will be transported to Lhasa. After breakfast, the trek begins towards Yangpachen. By noon, we will reach Yangpachen Monastery, a 500-year-old monastery and the central temple of the Karma Kagyu Red Hat Line of Tibetan Buddhism. Later, we will get to the hot springs, where you can take a hot bath.

Day 09

Drive to Lhasa O/N Hotel (BB)

After breakfast, we will move towards Lhasa. On the way, we will enjoy scenic views of mountains, forests, and streams.

Once you reach the Lhasa, you can acclimatize today, or in the evening, you can stroll around the Lhasa markets.

Overnight at Lhasa.

Day 10

Drive to airport for flight to onward destination.

Today is the last day of your trek. After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Gonggar airport, where you can return to your desired destination.
